Why Should You Care…?

Someone made a comment to me recently that stuck: “I don’t think people really care about making eco-friendly or even ethical choices when they shop.” If that’s true, we’re in trouble. Big trouble. Every choice we make has a consequence — and no one is immune from the impacts of choices we make now, and in the case of sustainability, on our planet later.

I’m usually a glass-half-full kind of person. An empath. Someone who truly believes that, at their core, most people do care — they just need the right information, a bit of inspiration, and an option that doesn’t make life harder. I know the cost of living is tight. I know economic uncertainty is real. I still believe we can make better choices, one small step at a time. So before you add that item to your cart, maybe just pause and ask:

  1. Do I really need it?

  2. Is there a better, more sustainable alternative?

  3. Is the cost of this worth it in the long run/bigger picture?

Even the tiniest shifts in what we buy can have a ripple effect far greater than we realise.

Did you know plastic bags were only introduced in the 1960s? For years we all survived just fine without this scourge to mankind. Now, we live in a world where we all want everything, yesterday, and for as little cost as possible. Plastic plays a big part in fulfilling the sense of entitlement we as a species have, that goes so far as a desire for things such as fruits and vegetables that are out of season. Haven’t you noticed that they taste better in season?? Just because they are available, doesn’t make it good. Doesn’t mean we have to buy them.

When it comes to ourselves and our friends and family, we’re all striving to do what’s best at the right price and cost (there is a difference), but do we have the same considerations for our pets? They have a footprint on this earth as well and they are our responsibility. Not only should we want to give them nourishing food, joyful moments, and a life full of love, but we should think about the choices we make beyond the bowl.

From the toys we buy to the packaging our treats come in, at My Pet Life, we believe that eco-friendly shouldn’t be a trend, but a responsibility. Change can feel overwhelming at times, but actually it can start with the smallest of actions: what we choose to bring into our homes.

Here’s why it matters.

1.

Less waste, less waste to have to…Waste…

Traditional pet treat packaging more often than not, ends up in landfill — sitting there for hundreds of years. This quite literally makes me feel ill.

In contrast, compostable packaging (like ours) breaks down naturally and nourishes the earth. That means your dog’s favourite snack doesn’t come at a long-term environmental cost.

2.

Cleaner Ingredients, Cleaner Conscience

Eco-friendly products are often made with cleaner, simpler ingredients — the kind you recognise and feel good about using. At My Pet Life, we use locally sourced, human-grade ingredients and avoid anything artificial or unnecessary. We opt for seasonal flavours because they taste better, are better for not being genetically modified, force grown etc. Good for pets, safe for humans, better for the earth.

3.

Supporting Small, Ethical Makers

When you choose eco-conscious brands, you’re often supporting small businesses that prioritise quality, ethics, and sustainability over mass production and profit. You’re voting with your dollar for a better kind of economy — one that values transparency, care, and long-term thinking.

4.

Healthier Homes for All Species

Toxic dyes, plastic micro-particles, chemical-laden sprays — many of these are used in mass-produced pet products. These aren’t just bad for the environment; they’re also not great for you or your pet. By choosing eco-friendly, you’re creating a cleaner, healthier space for everyone who lives under your roof.

5.

Every Choice Sends a Message

Whether we realise it or not, every product we purchase is a signal to producers: make more of this. When we choose sustainability, we help shift the market. We make it clear that eco-conscious products aren’t niche anymore — they’re the new normal.

6.

Better Quality, Longer Lasting

When you spend that little bit more on a higher quality product - whether that be a dress, a jumper, a toy, food - you’re making an investment. Yes, you can get everything cheaper - but what is the real cost of that? I think a lot of people are happy to not think about the wider ramifications, it’s too confronting, and such a big problem that the masses think they can’t make a difference. This is simply not true. If everyone thought “it’s just one plastic bag”, that’s 8 billion bags instantly. Yes, we are now not able to get plastic bags as we once did, but making them less available has happened because small change has led to big action. Small Actions, Big Impact.

You don’t have to be perfect. You don’t have to compost every scrap or buy only local, but even switching one product — like choosing a compostable pack of dog treats made with love, not preservatives — can be a meaningful start.

We know it’s possible to care for our pets and our planet at the same time. In fact, we believe it’s the only way forward.

I’ll go back to plastic bags. When they were introduced, they became regularly available and easy. 10 years ago, even 5, finding compostable packaging was tough - it’s still challenging these days to make sure you are actually buying something that does what it says on the tin - plenty of greenwashing out there - BUT there are so many more options and products on the market now, than there were. It’s that old adage of “if you build it they will come” or “If you buy it, they will make it” being more pertinent here…we spend hours choosing all of the products that ultimately end up as one pack of our treats. We spend more on the packaging because we want to make a difference and we want to make it easier for you, the consumer, to make a choice that is better in the long run. For everyone.

At My Pet Life, we’re not just feeding pets. We’re feeding a better future.
