Ribbons, Labels & Pouches: Tiny Details That Add Up to a Greener Business
When people see our products on shelves, the first thing they notice isn’t always the compostable pouch or reusable jar. They might not even notice our product at all to be honest. Possibly the colour of the label which is soothing might draw the eye, or the overall aesthetic of a simplistic, natural, quality product — we know that when you’re selling treats for pets, it’s really the humans you need to appeal to.
That’s why you’ll often see “cute” treats with sprinkles - they catch the eye, they look pretty, but let me guarantee you two things:
They’re not healthy.
Most dogs won’t eat them (even mine, who eats everything, won’t touch them).
So where does that leave My Pet Life with its simple, uncomplicated packaging and lack of bright, pretty colours?
It leaves us focused on the detail behind the detail.
Ribbons: When we use them — rarely — ours are biodegradable, not synthetic. We aren’t immune to pretty things, we just have an aversion to the ones whose only benefit is being pleasing to the eye for however long they survive outside of a bin…
Labels: Ours are 100% compostable and leave no plastic lining behind.
Pouches: Certified compostable — inks, adhesives, finishes and all. Trust me, finding these is not easy, options are limited and in Australia, certifying products to this standard takes waaaaaaaay too long.
Individually, these choices can feel almost invisible but together, they tell a bigger story: that we’re serious about being sustainable from top to bottom. Even if it means we’re not the flashiest product on the shelf, even if it means we get overlooked. Ok, well, obviously we’d rather that wasn’t the case, however, we are in this for the long haul and for us, it’s not about slogans, shortcuts, or chasing margins, it’s about the daily decisions — from concept to completion, from what we buy for ourselves to what we feed our animals that matters.
