Keep Your Pets Safe This Halloween

🎃 Halloween might be all about tricks, treats, and fun for some us humans — but for our pets, it can be a little less than magical. Between the strange costumes, doorbells ringing nonstop, and tempting sweets lying around, it’s one of the most stressful and potentially dangerous nights of the year for animals.

At My Pet Life, we believe every celebration can still be good for pets, people, and the planet — it just takes a little preparation and a lot of love.

1. Treats Are for Humans — or Dogs, If You Choose Wisely

A gentle reminder that chocolate, lollies, and anything sweetened with xylitol are toxic to dogs and cats. Even small amounts can cause serious harm. Instead, treat your furry friends to our Carob & Mint Bites or Pumpkin & Coconut Granola — both human-grade, naturally sweetened with ingredients such as banana, and made from real food you’d recognise from your own kitchen.

These safe, pet-friendly alternatives mean they can join the fun without risking their health.

2. Create a Calm Zone

Doorbells, strangers in costumes, and unusual noises can make even the most confident pets anxious.
Try setting up a “quiet room” with their favourite blanket, toy, and some calming Chamomile Bites or Apple & Blueberry treats. Soft music, dim lighting, and a closed curtain can help reduce overstimulation.

3. Watch the Costumes

Some pets tolerate dressing up; others don’t. If you do choose a costume, make sure it doesn’t restrict breathing, movement, or vision. Avoid anything with small, chewable parts that could cause choking. And remember — they don’t need a costume to be the cutest one at the party!

4. Keep Decorations Out of Reach

Pumpkin candles, fake cobwebs, and glow sticks can all pose risks.

Fake webs, in particular, may look festive, but they can entangle small animals and birds — especially those that visit your garden at dusk or dawn. Native birds, bats, and even pollinators like bees can become trapped in the synthetic fibres, often fatally. These webs don’t break down easily and can also shed microplastics into the soil.

A safer, eco-friendly alternative is to use natural, compostable decorations — think paper garlands, carved pumpkins, or locally made, biodegradable ribbons. They’re safer for animals, better for the planet, and still look beautiful.

5. Identification Matters

If your pet does get spooked and run off, a collar tag or microchip can be the difference between panic and peace of mind. Double-check that your details are up to date before the big night.

A Final Thought

Halloween doesn’t have to be scary for your pets. With a little planning and some My Pet Life goodness, you can keep tails wagging, paws safe, and the planet smiling.

Wellness in every bite — good for pets, people, and the planet. 🌏🐾
